Gustavo Lopez Moreno
The Artist
Gustavo Lopez Moreno is a contemporary painter based in Quito, Ecuador. Working primarily in oils and acrylics on large-format canvas, he navigates the borderlands between the tangible and the imagined — where memory dissolves into form, and form surrenders to silence. His practice is rooted in sustained observation and a deep engagement with the Andean landscape, which he renders not as scenery but as psychological terrain.
Lopez Moreno's compositions are marked by a restrained palette and an economy of gesture that belies the emotional weight they carry. Trained at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador and later at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia, he developed a vocabulary that moves fluidly between figuration and abstraction — never fully committing to either, always exploring the fertile territory between. His canvases invite sustained looking, rewarding patience with gradual revelations of texture, depth, and quiet intensity.
His work has been exhibited across galleries in Quito, Bogotá, Lima, Buenos Aires, Madrid, and Barcelona. He has participated in international art fairs including ARTBO and ArteBA, and his paintings are held in private collections throughout Latin America and Europe. Lopez Moreno currently lives and works in Quito, where he maintains a studio in the historic Mariscal district.
